Marcus has no user accounts and no database of you. Everything you write — your journals, emotion logs, weekly reviews — stays on your device. We collect anonymous usage statistics (which features are used, never what you wrote) so we can improve the app. We don't know who you are.
Anonymous usage events, such as "a practice was completed" or "a reading was generated." These events carry no names, no email addresses, no device identifiers, and never any content you have written. They cannot be tied to you as an individual. Everything you write is stored locally on your device using your device's native storage and is never transmitted to us.
Marcus uses the following third-party services:
Anthropic API. Used to generate your daily Stoic reading. When a reading is generated, the request includes your Compass reflections (your "why," what you want to overcome, who you aspire to be) so the reading can be personalized, along with themes from recent readings. The request is sent through our server, carries no account or identity (we have none for you), and is not stored by us. Your journals and emotion logs are never included. Aptabase. Privacy-first, anonymous analytics. Aptabase receives the usage events described above. It uses no device identifiers and no fingerprinting, and cannot identify individual users. Aptabase's privacy policy is available at aptabase.com/legal/privacy.
RevenueCat. Used to manage subscription purchases. RevenueCat receives your Apple-generated subscriber ID to verify your subscription status. No journal data or personal content is shared. RevenueCat's privacy policy is available at revenuecat.com/privacy.
Apple App Store. Subscription purchases are processed by Apple. Apple's privacy practices govern that transaction.
Your morning journals, evening reflections, emotion logs, and streak data are stored exclusively on your device. This data is never transmitted to any server, never shared with any third party, and is not accessible to us in any form. Your Compass reflections are also stored on your device; they leave it only as part of the reading-generation request described above, and only for that purpose.
With your explicit permission, Marcus writes one Mindful Session to Apple Health each time you complete a practice (Stoic Compass, Daily Reading, Morning or Evening Journal, or emotion log). The session contains only a start and end timestamp, never the content of your journal entries.
Marcus does not read any health or fitness data from your device. Health data managed by Apple Health stays on your device and is end-to-end encrypted by Apple. You can revoke this permission anytime in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Health → Marcus.
To delete all your data, simply delete the Marcus app from your device. All locally stored data is permanently removed when the app is uninstalled.
Marcus is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data from children.
If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the date above and note the change in the app's release notes.
